Tags do not die loudly. A publish on Tuesday renames a variable, the checkout tag references the old name, and for three weeks the dashboard reports a conversion drop that is actually a measurement corpse. Every dead tag is a break somewhere in one chain: tag, trigger, variables, version. "Show me every tag on the checkout trigger, what each requires, and what changed in the last three versions" reads the whole chain at once. The usual suspects surface immediately: a trigger condition tightened, a lookup variable deleted, a tag paused "temporarily" during a test, a consent setting flipped by a template update. Cross-check with GA4 in the same chat ("when did purchase events actually stop?") and you have the death date, which version history then maps to a publish and a culprit.
The audit that prevents the sequel
The same read access makes the periodic sweep cheap: tags firing on no trigger, triggers referencing deleted variables, duplicate tags on one event, containers whose live version is months behind the workspace. That used to be an afternoon in the UI per container; it is now one prompt per container, and agencies run it on every new client because the skeletons are always in the container.

Debugging is reactive by definition, so give the future a tripwire: an alert on the downstream event (checkout conversions at zero since yesterday, a Floodlight recording nothing for a week) catches the next silent death within a day.
